GODS AND GODDESSES
The people of ancient Egypt prayed to many gods. There were more than a thousand. Some looked like animals. Some looked like people. Some had the head of an animal and the body of a person. They had special powers.
Some gods protected life on earth and others ruled the Land of the Dead.
The Egyptians believed that after a person died, his soul went to the Underground. There were many dangers on the way. There were snakes, lakes of fire,demons,.. So there were special rules to travel there.The dead person used magic spells, prayers and maps. All they were in "The Book of the Dead".
Osiris, Isis and Anubis were the gods of the Land of the Dead. Osiris asked the person many questions. If the person's answer liked the gods, he had the most important test.
Anubis held up a scale and Maat placed her Feather of Truth on one side of the scale and the dead person's heart on the other side.
If the feather was heavier than the heart, a monster with the head of a crocodile sat next to the scale, ate the heart !
If the feather and the heart weighed the same, the person went to a beautiful place and lived there forever.
