WRITING
The ancient Egyptians discovered many things. They invented the first type of paper and were the first people to write in pictures.

PAPYRUS PLANT
The ancient Egyptians had no paper - they wrote on papyrus, a tall plant that grows wild on the banks of the Nile.
Papyrus was expensive and it lasted a long time.
SCRIBES
Scribes were very important in
ancient Egypt. Scribes were people who learned to read and write.
Only boys went to school when they were six or seven and studied during twelve years to be scribes.
A scribe's job was to write letters and keep records. They also taught children to read and write.

HIEROGLYPHS
Egyptians used pictures of objects, animals and people to write. They were called hieroglyphs.
There were 700 different hieroglyphs. There were hieroglyphs for a letter, some for a group of letters, and others for a word.
Egyptians wrote from left to right, or right to left, or in columns. Always star reading from the direction the animal or people sings are facing.
Egyptians wrote Pharaophs' name inside an oval shape called a cartouche.
